Metro Tiles

When you look at a metro tile, the image that might first come to mind is a London Underground station. That’s because this style was invented specifically for this purpose. Originally designed completely flat, these narrow tiles were easy to keep clean and could be laid on the curved surfaces of train tunnels without cracking or falling off.

Today, the classic metro look incorporates a bevelled edge, giving a softer, more refined finish; however, flat styles are also available. Because of their narrow shape and small size – typically 10cm x 20cm – it’s unusual to see metro tiles used as flooring, but they’re fantastically versatile when it comes to wall spaces.

At Tons of Tiles, we stock a wide range of metro tiles. Our classic style, and a perennial favourite with home decorators, is the Metro: a 10cm x 20cm rectangular tile with a bevelled edge. This style is available in several different shades and finishes, although gloss is the most popular.

For a slightly edgier look, opt for our Metro Flat range. These tiles are not bevelled, which means they sit flush with one another. A little less glossy and refined than the classic Metro, these tiles lend a cool and contemporary vibe to kitchen and bathroom spaces.

For large wall areas, there are our XL tiles – which come in the classic Metro and Metro Flat styles. These 10cm x 30cm tiles give an elegant, modern finish and are well suited to wet rooms and bath rooms when properly sealed.

On the other end of the scale are our small tiles, the Mini Metro and the Mini Metro Flat, which are perfect for tiling small areas such as sink or stove splashbacks. The narrow Microline tile – which measures 5cm x 20cm – draws on the urban cool of the Metro Flat, and lends itself well to more complex tile layouts, such as herringbone.

Lastly, if you’re seeking patterns and textures, check out our Verona and Metro Stone Effect ranges, which are inspired by the look and feel of marble.
