The Benefits of Using Electric Underfloor Heating

Owning our own home is something most of us dream of doing by the time we’ve reached middle age. But there’s a lot more to it than simply finding the right mortgage and arranging a moving van. When you have your own home, you have the freedom to decorate and rebuild, adding extensions, insulation, new floors, and perhaps even paving everything over to start from scratch.

If you’re planning on making some changes to your home, underfloor heating is definitely something to consider. Here are a few reasons why...

It’s easy to maintain

Underfloor heating is created by laying heating mats or cables onto an insulated sub-floor, and then laying your flooring over the top. Because of this, it’s very easy to maintain. There are no moving parts to consider, and if there are any problems with the system they will usually be detected early on during installation. That means you won’t have to shell out for repairs.

It can be used with any flooring

Underfloor heating can be used with almost any kind of flooring – even carpet! This means it’s perfect for practically any room in your home. However, it’s worthwhile noting that ceramic, porcelain or stone tiles are the flooring style best suited to underfloor heating, as they conduct and retain heat better than other materials.

It’s safe

If you have young children, you might be aware of the dangers posed by metal radiators or heating vents. Underfloor heating creates a far safer environment by eliminating the need for these unfriendly elements.

It can be used as a primary or secondary heat source

If you want to rid your home entirely of radiators and vents, then you can easily make your underfloor heating your primary heat source. This can be done by simply ensuring a coverage of at least 80% across the floors. Of course, you can also use underfloor heating as a secondary heat source, or solely in areas of your home that are particularly prone to heat loss, such as conservatories.

Below is a diagram showing the effectiveness of underfloor heating compared to central heating. Our figures are based on a room 3x3m and 2.7m high. All prices are approx.

It allows you to heat one room at a time

Each room that uses underfloor heating will require its own thermostat control. That means you can be efficient about your energy usage, only turning on your heating supply in rooms that are being used. Explore our range of Thermostats.

It can be used in wet rooms

You might think that an underfloor electric heating system wouldn’t be a good addition to a bathroom or wet room; but because modern heating mats and cables are so well insulated, they are completely safe to use in these kinds of spaces.

It makes for easier interior design

When you don’t have to worry about the placement of heating vents or bulky radiators, you have much more freedom to design and decorate. Underfloor heating also heats a room more evenly than traditional heaters – so you don’t have to worry about crowding the sofas into that one cosy corner!

It can work with heat pumps

If you’re environmentally conscious and keen to save on energy costs, rest assured that you can use underfloor heating with renewable products such as heat pumps.

Lastly, heated floors genuinely make for a better quality of life. Walking into a cosy, evenly heated room makes all the difference on a cold, dark winter’s day. Underfloor heating also produces less airborne dust, which is hugely beneficial for anyone suffering from asthma or a dust allergy.

Please Note: When using underfloor heating in large areas, multiple mats or cables can be combined to cover large/any size areas*

*For loads over 16amps/3600W, additional thermostats or a relay switch must be used.
